Experienced GRC Mold Silicone Manufacturer Buying Guide 2026

A GRC producer casts a decorative panel, pulls the mould, and finds the base has bowed. The panel goes into the reject pile, the mould goes into the bin, and the enquiry turns into an argument about which side supplied the wrong material. In most of these cases the silicone was not faulty. It was simply too soft for the weight it had to hold.

GRC moulds are not like small craft moulds. The mix is heavy, the panels are large, and the mould often has to keep its shape across a run rather than a single cast. Choosing the rubber on price per kilogram is how the bowing starts.

What makes GRC different

Three forces act on a GRC mould at once. The wet mix presses outward on the cavity wall. The panel's own weight pulls the mould away from the support shell if the shell is not stiff enough. And the surface detail of the original has to survive in reverse across the whole run.

A soft silicone handles the third requirement well and the first two badly. That is why a grade that works nicely for soap or figurines can fail completely on a 40mm thick panel.

The practical range for GRC work sits at the firm end of the addition curing scale, roughly 35 to 50 Shore A. Within that band, the choice between a 35 and a 50 comes down to panel thickness, span and how much undercut the profile contains.

The parameters worth asking about

Hardness in Shore A. Not "firm" or "hard", but a number. A supplier who cannot state it is not working from a specification.

Curing chemistry. Addition cure, also called platinum cure, releases no by-products. For GRC that matters twice: the plaster or stone original stays clean and can be reused, and the mould does not drift in dimension over a production run.

Shrinkage behaviour. Nobody sells a mould material that shrinks by design. What you want is a supplier who can describe how they control it and who keeps samples per batch so that a complaint can be traced.

Support shell advice. A mould is a system. A supplier who never asks about your shell, your release agent, or your mix design has not thought about why moulds fail.

Documentation. ISO 9001, RoHS, REACH, FDA, UL and CE documents come up in export enquiries. What matters is whether the document covers the product group you actually ordered.

Supplier types, side by side

Dimension Trading company Small workshop Manufacturer with in-house compounding
Where the rubber comes from Resold from a maker Base material bought in Formulated in house
Hardness advice for GRC Repeats a datasheet Practical but narrow range Matched to panel and span
Batch consistency Depends upstream Varies between lots Samples and release per batch
Certification coverage Maker's documents Limited Issued per product group
Trial quantity Often a full container Possible, stock limited Small trial with pre-production cast
When a mould fails Both sides wait Little capacity to investigate Batch can be traced and re-checked

Resellers have a place. For a standard grade in a steady volume, buying through one can be straightforward. The difficulty appears the moment your requirement moves: a thicker panel, a new profile, a document your customer asks for. Then the answer has to come from whoever mixed the material.

Workshops are flexible on small quantities and often respond quickly. Their exposure is consistency. If a mould has to survive a long run rather than a handful of casts, batch-to-batch variation becomes a production problem rather than a purchasing one.

Matching the grade to the job

Slender decorative trims and small brackets usually run fine from 35 Shore A, where detail pickup is still good and the section is thin enough to release by hand.

Standard wall panels and cladding sit around 40 Shore A: firm enough to resist bowing over the panel face, still workable around undercuts.

Deep section columns, large spans and heavy castings justify 45 to 50 Shore A with a properly braced support shell. At that point the rubber is holding a wall in place, not following a curve.

A trial that actually predicts performance

Trial orders are where suppliers can be separated. Ask for a small quantity, and cast it on the profile you intend to run, not a sample block. Then measure four things: whether the fine relief comes out clean at the edges, whether the mould returns to true after the first pull, whether the second and third casts match the first, and whether the base stays flat under a full load.

Keep a cured piece from the trial. When the next delivery arrives, compare the two by feel and by hardness rather than by the label on the drum.

Buyers who need documents, adjustable hardness and traceability usually settle on a manufacturer with in-house compounding. HONG YE SILICONE produces addition curing mould silicone in the HY-E series from 10 to 50 Shore A, in 1:1 and 10:1 mix ratios, keeps batch samples for traceability, and issues ISO 9001, RoHS, REACH, FDA, UL and CE documents by model where they apply. Trial quantities start from 10kg for export customers, and a pre-production cast on your own master is part of the process.

If a panel is bowing right now, the fastest way to find out whether the rubber is the cause is to compare hardness and batch first, then re-cast a small section at one step firmer. Ask for the model that matches your panel and section, and cast it before you commit the mould.
