Pad Printing Head Manufacturing Process Guide How to Make High Quality Durable Pad Hongye Silicone

2026,08,31
Pad printing head is the core component of pad printing process, its quality directly affects printing results, production efficiency and overall cost. Many enterprises encounter problems like blurred patterns, pinhole bubbles, pad cracking and short service life in pad printing production, and the root cause often lies in non standardized head making process. Shenzhen Hongyejie Technology Co., Ltd. Hongye Silicone, with nearly 20 years of Pad Printing Silicone R&D and application experience, introduces the complete pad printing head manufacturing process and key control points, helping enterprises make high quality, durable pads with excellent printing results.
Preparation Work Before Head Making
Making high quality pad printing heads requires careful preparation. First is pad mold preparation. Mold quality directly determines head shape and surface quality. The mold must be thoroughly cleaned to remove dust, oil, residual silicone and other impurities, wiped with alcohol or special cleaner. Then apply mold release agent evenly, thin and uniform without accumulation, leave 5 to 10 minutes to dry fully. Insufficient release agent causes demolding difficulty, while excessive release agent affects head surface quality. Place the mold on a level stable surface to prevent uneven silicone flow after pouring.
Second is material preparation. Selecting the right pad printing silicone model is fundamental. Choose silicone with appropriate hardness based on product shape, printing requirements and production volume. For flat and slightly curved products, select medium high hardness like Hongye HY-902 or HY-912. For large curved surfaces, select ultra soft Hongye HY-916. For small batch multi variety production, select economy Hongye HY-901. Before use, stir component A base rubber thoroughly for 1 to 2 minutes as fillers may settle, ensuring uniform color and filler distribution, scraping bucket walls and bottom. Component B curing agent should also be gently shaken before use. Prepare electronic scale, mixing container, stirring rod, vacuum equipment if available.
Key Points of Weighing and Mixing
Weighing and mixing are the most critical steps in head making, directly affecting curing quality and performance. Hongye pad printing silicone standard mixing ratio is 100:2 (A:B by weight), must be accurately weighed with electronic scale within ±5% tolerance, do not estimate ratio by feeling. Excessive component B causes overly hard, brittle pads with shortened life, while insufficient component B causes incomplete curing, sticky pads and unstable performance. Weigh component A first, then add component B in correct proportion.
Mixing must be thorough and uniform, stir for 3 to 5 minutes, continuously scraping container walls and bottom to ensure complete uniform mixing. The sign of uniform mixing is completely consistent color with no streaks, color blocks or uneven color. Stir at moderate speed, too fast introduces excessive bubbles, too slow results in uneven mixing. Keep the stirring rod submerged in the rubber surface to avoid air entrainment. Pour promptly after mixing as working time is generally 30 to 40 minutes, beyond which the rubber starts thickening and curing, affecting pouring and degassing.
Pouring and Degassing Techniques
Pouring and degassing determine whether there are bubbles inside the head, and bubbles are one of the most common head defects causing pinholes and pattern missing in printing. When pouring, slowly pour the mixed silicone from one side of the mold, let it flow naturally to fill the mold, avoid pouring from high altitude which causes impact bubbles. Fill to about 80 percent, do not overfill, leave space for degassing and cover plate.
Degassing is a key step in making high quality heads. If vacuum equipment is available, place the poured mold in a vacuum chamber, degas at negative 0.09MPa for 2 to 3 minutes until no more bubbles rise from the rubber surface. Observe during vacuuming, the rubber will expand and rise, release pressure and re vacuum if necessary to avoid overflow. Without vacuum equipment, let the poured mold sit for 5 to 10 minutes to allow bubbles to rise and release naturally, or gently sweep the rubber surface with a low temperature heat gun to help bubbles break. After degassing, gently cover the mold to avoid introducing bubbles.
Curing Demolding and Post Treatment
Curing time is affected by temperature, generally 2 to 4 hours at room temperature 25°C for demolding. Lower temperature extends curing time, higher temperature shortens it. For faster curing, place the mold in a 60°C oven for 30 to 60 minutes, but temperature must not exceed 100°C as excessive temperature affects head performance. After curing, gently remove the head, do not pull forcefully to avoid tearing. Newly demolded heads have not fully stabilized performance, need to rest 24 hours before use, early use affects printing results and head life.
Head post treatment includes surface cleaning and shape trimming. Before use, gently wipe the head surface with alcohol to remove dust and oil. Before first use, do several test prints on waste paper to condition the surface and reach stable state. If the head has minor burrs or irregularities, gently trim with fine sandpaper, but do not over polish affecting surface quality. Heads for different products should be stored separately to avoid cross contamination. When not in use, wrap the surface with plastic film and store in a cool dry place, avoid direct sunlight and dust.
Common Defects and Prevention Methods
Common defects in head making include bubbles, uneven hardness, incomplete curing, surface stickiness and deformation. Bubbles are the most common defect, caused by air entrainment during stirring, improper pouring method, insufficient degassing and dusty molds. Prevention methods include moderate stirring speed, slow pouring from one side, sufficient vacuum degassing and clean molds. Uneven hardness is caused by insufficient mixing, unstirred component A and inaccurate weighing. Prevention methods include thorough stirring of component A before use, accurate weighing and scraping container walls during mixing.
Incomplete curing and surface stickiness are caused by insufficient component B ratio, uneven mixing, low temperature and insufficient curing time. Prevention methods include accurate 100:2 weighing, thorough mixing, ensuring curing temperature and time, and resting 24 hours after demolding before use. Head deformation is caused by unlevel mold, pressure during curing, premature demolding and improper storage. Prevention methods include level mold placement, no pressure during curing, sufficient curing before demolding and proper storage without compression. Mastering these common defect causes and prevention methods effectively improves head making qualification rate.
