Pad Printing Head Wear Cause Analysis and Life Extension Practical Tips Hongye Silicone

2026,08,27
Pad printing head is the core consumable in pad printing process, its quality and service life directly affect print quality, production cost and efficiency. In actual production, many companies face problems of rapid pad wear, short service life, frequent replacement and high cost, especially in high volume continuous production industries such as stationery, tools and hardware, where pad consumption is large and frequent replacement not only increases consumable cost but also causes increased downtime and reduced production efficiency. Shenzhen Hongyejie Technology Co., Ltd. Hongye Silicone, combining nearly 20 years of Pad Printing Silicone R&D and application experience, analyzes main causes of pad printing head wear and shares practical tips to extend pad service life.
Main Causes of Pad Printing Head Wear
Pad printing head wear results from multiple factors, and understanding wear causes is the premise of life extension. Common wear causes include the following aspects.
First, improper material selection. Different hardness and formula pad printing silicone suit different products and production conditions. Improper selection accelerates wear. For example, high volume high speed continuous production using low hardness economical silicone with soft texture and insufficient wear resistance will quickly wear out. Hardware tools industry with oil or anti-rust coating on product surfaces, if using oil-sensitive pads, will be eroded by oil accelerating aging.
Second, ink solvent erosion. Pad printing inks contain organic solvents that gradually penetrate into silicone pads, causing swelling, softening, loss of elasticity, ultimately accelerating aging and wear. Different ink types have different solvent content and erosiveness, with fast-drying and strong solvent inks being more erosive. If residual ink on pad surface is not cleaned promptly during printing, solvent continuously erodes pad surface accelerating aging.
Third, wrong cleaning methods. Many companies use solvents such as press wash, alcohol, thinner to repeatedly wipe pads for cleaning residual ink, which accelerates pad aging and wear. Solvents destroy silicone surface structure, causing stickiness, softening, loss of elasticity, eventually cracking or debris. Some companies use rough cloth or paper towel to forcefully wipe pads, scratching the surface and accelerating wear.
Fourth, hard object scratching from product surfaces. Tools, hardware, plastic parts may have burrs, sharp edges, hard coatings or metal edges. During pad printing pressing, these hard objects scratch pad surface causing scratches, corner chipping, tearing, accelerating wear. Especially when product positioning is inaccurate or fixture is loose, friction between pad and hard object parts is more severe, and pads quickly get damaged.
Fifth, improper operation and maintenance. Excessive printing pressure, too fast pressing speed, loose pad installation, rough operation during frequent product changes all accelerate pad wear. Failure to clean pads promptly after use, exposure to dust and sunlight, cross-contamination with different inks also accelerate aging. Some companies mix pads for different products together causing cross-contamination and accidental damage.
Sixth, improper storage. Pad storage environment with high temperature, direct sunlight, contact with oil or chemicals, squeezing deformation all accelerate aging and shorten service life. Especially unused new pads, if improperly stored, surface becomes sticky and deformed, already aged before use, naturally shortening service life.
Practical Tips to Extend Pad Service Life
Addressing the above wear causes, Hongye Silicone shares the following practical tips to extend pad printing head service life.
First, correct selection matching product and production conditions. Choose appropriate hardness and formula pad printing silicone based on product shape, material, batch size and printing conditions. For high volume continuous production, high frequency pressing, stationery and tools industry, recommend high wear resistant long life type such as Hongye 902 with 28 Shore A hardness, excellent wear and tear resistance, service life 30% longer than standard economical type. For hardware industry with oil on product surfaces choose oil-resistant pads. For large radius curved products choose extra-soft type such as Hongye 916 to avoid local excessive friction wear from insufficient conformability. Small batch multi-product companies can keep 2 to 3 hardness levels in stock for flexible selection.
Second, control ink solvent erosion. Choose good quality pad printing ink with moderate solvent content, avoid using inferior strong solvent ink. Select appropriate drying speed ink based on printing speed and drying requirements, avoid using strong solvent fast-drying ink just for quick drying. Promptly clean residual ink from pad surface during printing, do not let ink remain on pad surface for long time. Regularly replace ink, avoid using expired or deteriorated ink.
Third, adopt correct cleaning methods. For residual ink on pad surface, use clean non-woven fabric or adhesive tape to gently remove, try to avoid solvent wiping. If solvent cleaning is necessary, use mild dedicated silicone cleaner, small amount quick wipe, immediately dry with clean cloth after cleaning, do not let solvent remain on pad surface for long time. Never use thinner, acetone or other strong solvents to wipe pads. Use soft non-woven or lint-free cloth, do not use rough paper towel or cloth to avoid scratching pad surface.
Fourth, reduce hard object scratching from products. Check product surfaces before printing, remove burrs and sharp edges, adjust printing pressure and speed for products with hard coatings. Ensure accurate product positioning and firm fixtures, avoid product shifting during printing causing excessive friction between pad and hard object parts. For products with particularly rough surfaces or metal edges, appropriately reduce printing pressure, or add buffer at pad product contact area to reduce hard object scratching.
Fifth, standardize operation and daily maintenance. Adjust appropriate printing pressure and pressing speed, excessive pressure and too fast speed both accelerate pad wear, choose minimum necessary pressure based on clear complete pattern standard. Ensure firm pad installation, avoid loosening and shifting during printing. Handle gently when changing products, do not roughly pull pads. Promptly clean pad surface after use, wrap with plastic film, store in cool dry place. Store pads for different products separately with labels, avoid cross-contamination and accidental damage.
Sixth, correct storage. Pads should be stored in cool dry ventilated place, temperature below 25 degree Celsius, avoid direct sunlight and high temperature. Keep away from oil, chemicals, dust and fire sources. Separate pads with release paper or plastic film to avoid mutual adhesion and squeezing deformation. Keep unused new pads in original packaging, open before use. Regularly check inventory pad condition, first in first out, avoid long-term storage causing aging.
